4R NUTRIENT STEWARDSHIP GUIDEBOOK: LEARNING MODULES FOR EXTENSION AGENTS
in Nutrient ManagementAbout this course
Welcome to our comprehensive course on Effective Fertilizer Use, guided by the 4R Nutrient Stewardship, a crucial framework for developing sustainable smallholder cropping systems. This course is designed to empower extension agents, agro-dealers, and stakeholders working with smallholder farmers in Africa. By understanding and implementing the 4R principles, we aim to enhance food production, increase income for farmers, and promote the sustainable management of soil fertility.
Fertilizers play a pivotal role in supplying essential nutrients to crops, leading to improved yields and quality food and cash crops. In the context of over-exploited soils, fertilizers become instrumental in restoring soil fertility. The correct management of fertilizers based on the 4Rs—applying the right source of nutrients, at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place—holds the key to achieving better social, economic, and environmental outcomes for farms, villages, communities, and entire countries in Africa.
Our guidebook contains four modules (RIGHT SOURCE, RIGHT RATE, RIGHT TIME AND RIGHT PLACE), providing a detailed overview for advisors working closely with smallholder farmers. By mastering these principles, extension agents and agro-dealers will be equipped with the knowledge needed to effectively communicate optimal fertilizer use strategies to farmers. The 4R Nutrient Stewardship concept serves as a foundation for defining strategies that ensure the judicious and sustainable use of nutrients.Upon completion of the course, learners are expected to answer a set of questions. A certificate will be awarded to those who achieve a score of 80% or higher, corresponding to correctly answering 32 out of the 40 questions provided.
Join us on this educational journey as we explore the right ways to manage fertilizers, contribute to improved food security, elevate farmers' incomes, and foster the responsible stewardship of our precious soil resources. Together, we can make a lasting impact on agricultural practices, benefiting individuals, communities and the environment across the African continent.
